Herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Its caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV), which has two types: HSV-1 and HSV-2.
Outbreaks can occur on both the mouth and genitals,
producing small clear fluid-filled blisters on the skin or mucosa
that may rupture and form painful sores.
Recurrences are possible because the virus hides in nerve cells,
so once infected, the virus remains in the body.

How Herpes Spreads
- Unprotected sexual contact (vaginal, anal, oral) and kissing when a partner has active blisters.
- Direct contact with sores or the fluid from blisters.
- Reactivation during low immunity, poor sleep, or high stress.
Symptoms of Herpes Simplex
- Clusters of clear blisters or small sores on the genitals, around the anus, or on the lips; burning or pain is common.
- Blisters can become pus-filled if theres a bacterial superinfection.
- Painful urination.
- Pain during sex.
- Some people develop fever or swollen lymph nodes.
Diagnosis
Doctors diagnose based on the appearance of lesions,
and may collect a swab from a sore
for PCR testing or viral culture.
Herpes Treatment
There's currently no cure that eliminates HSV completely,
but symptoms can be controlled with antivirals such as acyclovir or valacyclovir,
and topical acyclovir cream to relieve symptoms and reduce transmission.
Prevention
- Use condoms every time you have sex (they help if lesions are in areas covered by the condom).
- Avoid sex and kissing during active blisters or sores.
- Get enough sleep and manage stress to reduce recurrences.
