Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
It is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), there are more than 82 million new infections each year worldwide.
Without treatment, gonorrhea can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and infection in newborns.
Causes of Gonorrhea
- Transmission of Neisseria gonorrhoeae through sexual fluids such as semen and vaginal discharge.
- Unprotected sex or multiple sexual partners without condoms.
Symptoms of Gonorrhea
- Men: Painful urination, pus-like discharge, redness or swelling at the penis tip.
- Women: Abnormal vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, painful sex, burning urination.
- All genders: May affect throat, rectum, or eyes, causing sore throat, anal irritation, or conjunctivitis with pus.
- Some people show no symptoms but can still spread the infection.
Diagnosis of Gonorrhea
Diagnosis is done by swab tests or fluid samples,
confirmed with culture or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) for high accuracy.
Doctors also recommend screening for other STDs together.
Treatment for Gonorrhea
According to CDC (2021), treatment involves cephalosporin antibiotics such as intramuscular Ceftriaxone.
In some cases, Azithromycin may be prescribed if coinfection is suspected.
Treating sexual partners is crucial to stop reinfection and transmission.
Gonorrhea Prevention
- Always use condoms during sex.
- Get regular sexual health checkups.
- Avoid frequent partner changes.
- Ensure both partners get tested and treated if infected.
