A cervical polyp is a small growth that protrudes from the cervix. Most cervical polyps are benign, and many people have no symptoms. They are often discovered during a pelvic examination or cervical cancer screening.
Some patients may experience bleeding after sex, spotting between periods, or increased vaginal discharge.
Most cervical polyps are not cancerous. However, if there is abnormal bleeding or an unusual-looking cervical lesion, further evaluation is recommended. Doctor may recommend removal of the polyp or a biopsy if abnormal or cancerous cells are suspected.

What Causes a Cervical Polyp?
The exact cause of cervical polyps is not fully understood. However, they have been associated with chronic inflammation of the cervix, certain infections, and hormonal changes.
Cervical polyps can occur in adult women and are more commonly found in those who have previously been pregnant or given birth.
Symptoms of Cervical Polyp
Many people with cervical polyps have no symptoms and the polyp is discovered incidentally. However, possible symptoms include:
- Bleeding after sexual intercourse
- Bleeding or spotting between periods
- Heavier menstrual bleeding than usual
- Bleeding after menopause
- Increased or abnormal vaginal discharge in some patients
Are Cervical Polyps Dangerous?
Most cervical polyps are benign. Precancerous or cancerous cells within a cervical polyp are uncommon.
However, the appearance of a cervical growth alone cannot confirm its type with 100% certainty. When a cervical polyp is removed, the tissue is commonly sent for pathological examination to confirm that there are no abnormal cells.
How to treat Cervical Polyp?
If the cervical polyp is small and has a narrow stalk, the doctor may perform a cervical polypectomy, which is a minor procedure to remove the polyp. In most cases, hospitalization is not required.
After cervical polyp removal, mild bleeding or temporary cramping similar to menstrual cramps may occur.
The removed tissue should be sent for pathological examination to confirm the diagnosis and check for abnormal or cancerous cells.
If the polyp is large, has a broad base, or is suspected to originate from inside the uterine cavity, other procedures such as hysteroscopy may be required depending on the gynecologist's evaluation.
