What Is CO Laser Treatment for Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause small bumps or growths on the genital area, around the anus, or on nearby skin.

Treatment with CO Laser uses high-energy laser heat to directly destroy wart tissue. It can be used to remove genital warts, similar to other treatment methods such as cryotherapy, TCA chemical treatment, electrocautery, or surgical removal.

Who May Be Suitable for Genital Wart Laser?

• Patients with clearly visible genital warts on the external genital area, around the vaginal opening, or around the anus
• Patients with multiple genital warts or relatively large lesions
• Patients who want faster removal of visible lesions instead of repeated topical treatments
• Patients whose lesions remain or recur after other treatment methods

Steps of CO Laser Treatment for Genital Warts

The doctor examines the lesions to confirm that they are consistent with genital warts and to assess their number, location, and size.

How Genital Warts Are Counted

• A wart measuring no more than 1 cm is counted as 1 lesion.
• For a large plaque-like wart, the number of lesions is calculated using width × length. For example, a wart measuring 1.5 cm × 3 cm = 4.5 lesions.

1. Topical anesthetic or local anesthetic injection is used as appropriate

   Topical anesthetic is usually applied for approximately 3050 minutes to help reduce discomfort during the procedure.

2. The lesions are removed using a CO Laser

   The procedure usually takes approximately 1550 minutes depending on the location, number, size, and thickness of the genital warts.

3. Aftercare instructions are provided

   After treatment, small wounds or scabs may remain depending on the size of the warts. Temporary burning, stinging, or irritation may occur in the treated area.

Can CO Laser Completely Cure Genital Warts?

Laser treatment can remove visible genital warts, but it cannot completely eliminate HPV from the body.

Therefore, genital warts may recur after treatment. Approximately 20-30% of patients may experience recurrence during the first 3-6 months after treatment.

Recurrence does not necessarily mean that the laser treatment failed. HPV may still remain in nearby skin, or additional exposure may occur through skin contact, friction, or sexual activity. Follow-up is recommended, and patients should return for evaluation if new genital warts appear.

After-Care Genital Wart Laser Treatment?

• Keep the treated area clean according to your doctor's instructions.

• Gently pat the treated area dry every time after using the bathroom.

• Avoid picking or scratching the treated area.

• Avoid activities that cause significant friction while the wound is still healing.

• Avoid sexual intercourse until the treated area has healed, according to your doctor's advice.

• If you experience heavy bleeding, significant redness or swelling, pus, or increasing pain, return to see the doctor.
