Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide.
According to WHO (2023), there are over 129 million new infections annually.
Chlamydia often has no obvious symptoms, so many people dont realize theyre infected and may unintentionally transmit it to partners.
Without treatment, chlamydia can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.
It spreads through vaginal, anal, and oral sex,
and may also be passed from mother to baby during delivery.
Chlamydia Causes & Risk Factors
- Sex without condoms or barrier protection.
- Multiple sexual partners.
- History of other STIs.
Chlamydia Symptoms
Most people with chlamydia are asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they may include:
- Female: Abnormal vaginal discharge, painful urination, pelvic pain, intermenstrual bleeding.
- Male: Urethral discharge, burning or pain with urination.
- Rectal infection: Pain, discharge, or bleeding from the rectum.
- Eye infection (conjunctivitis): Red, irritated eyes with dischargecan occur if semen contacts the eye (e.g., during oral sex or splashes).
Diagnosis of Chlamydia
Confirmation is done via urine testing
or swabs from the cervix/urethra/lesions/discharge
tested by PCR (NAAT) or culture, which have high accuracy.
Chlamydia Treatment
First-line therapy is antibiotics such as azithromycin (single dose)
or doxycycline (7 days).
Treat sexual partners at the same time to stop reinfection,
and avoid sex until the full course is completed and symptoms resolve.
How to Prevent Chlamydia Infection
- Use condoms or dental dams every time you have sex.
- Get routine STI check, especially if you have new or multiple partners, or higher risk.
- Pregnant individuals should be tested and treated to prevent transmission to newborns.
Doctors Advice
Chlamydia is curable,
but delayed treatment increases the risk of infertility and long-term pelvic problems.
Regular screening and consistent condom use are essential.
If you have symptoms or risk factors, see a clinician for testing and treatment.
