Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum.
It spreads through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, as well as direct contact with syphilis sores.
The infection can also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy.
It remains one of the most common STIs worldwide. According to WHO (2023), more than 7 million new cases are reported each year.
Without treatment, syphilis can progress and cause serious complications to the heart, brain, and other internal organs.
Causes of Syphilis

Chancre : Dry and Painless Syphilis Sore

Syphilis Rash : Reddish and painless
Symptoms of Syphilis
Syphilis progresses in four main stages:
- Primary: Firm, painless sores (chancres) on genitals or mouth. Sores heal on their own, but the infection persists if untreated.
- Secondary: Rashes (especially on palms/soles), swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue. Symptoms may resolve but infection remains.
- Latent: No visible symptoms, but blood tests show infection. Results from untreated or incomplete treatment in earlier stages.
- Tertiary: Severe complications affecting brain, heart, and major blood vessels.
Diagnosis
Doctors use medical history, physical exam, and blood tests such as VDRL, RPR, or TPHA.
In some cases, swab samples from sores or secretions may be tested directly.
Treatment for Syphilis
- Penicillin G injection is the standard treatment.
- Those allergic to penicillin may use alternative antibiotics under medical supervision.
- Both the patient and their sexual partners must be treated simultaneously.
- Follow-up blood tests confirm successful treatment.
Syphilis Prevention
- Always use condoms during sex.
