Article by Dr. Thitiporn Tungwiwattanapanit: General Practitioner, Sexologist, Founder of Clitoria Clinic
Vaginal dryness is a condition where the vaginal lining produces less natural lubrication than normal,
leading to dryness, pain, burning, or irritation, especially during sexual intercourse.
It is a common problem among women of various ages,
particularly during menopause, but it can also occur in women of reproductive age.
This condition can affect quality of life, comfort, and sexual health.
Causes of Vaginal Dryness
- Decreased estrogen levels, such as during menopause, postpartum, or after ovary removal surgery
- Side effects from certain medications, such as antihistamines, blood pressure medications, or chemotherapy
- Stress, anxiety, and relationship factors with partners
- Using harsh vaginal cleansers or internal douching
- Vaginal inflammation or infection
- Blockage of the Bartholin's glands, which help produce vaginal mucus
- Dehydration
Diagnosis
A doctor will take a medical history, perform a physical examination,
and may conduct a pelvic exam to assess the vaginal lining.
In some cases, blood tests may be ordered to check hormone levels.
Treatment and Prevention of Vaginal Dryness
- Treat underlying conditions firstfor example, if there is inflammation or infection, it should be addressed before other treatments.
- Use water-based lubricants or vaginal moisturizers specifically designed for the vagina.
- Apply topical estrogencream or vaginal suppositories (under medical guidance).
- For menopausal women, hormone replacement therapy may be considered in certain cases.
- Avoid soaps or products that cause irritation.
- Drink enough water2 to 3 liters per day.
- Consume healthy fats in moderation to support hormone production.
