Dyspareunia, or painful sexual intercourse,
is a common issue among women worldwide.
It may occur before, during, or after penetration and can be caused by both physical and psychological factors.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
approximately 8-21% of women globally experience dyspareunia at some point in their lives,
most commonly between the ages of 20-50.
How Common Is Dyspareunia Among Women?
Studies by the World Health Organization
and published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine
report prevalence rates between 8-21%.
It is particularly common among women in their reproductive years and postpartum period.
In Thailand, official data is limited,
but research from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University indicates that many Thai women experience this issue but often hesitate to seek medical help.
Causes of Painful Intercourse
- Physical causes: Vaginal dryness, infections, ovarian cysts (PCOS), endometriosis, uterine fibroids, usage of some medicine causing vaginal dryness

- If no physical abnormality is found, referral to sex therapy and clinical psychology may be recommended
