What is the HPV Vaccine? Can It Protect You From Cervical Cancer?

1. What is HPV? How dangerous is it? How is it transmitted?

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally,

with over 100 types.

Some types are low-risk (like HPV-6 and HPV-11, which cause genital warts),

while others are high-risk (like HPV-16 and HPV-18, which can lead to cervical cancer).

HPV spreads through vaginal, anal, or oral sex and even skin-to-skin genital contact without penetration.

2. Does the HPV vaccine really work? How effective is it?

According to the WHO and CDC,

the HPV vaccine can prevent up to 90% of HPV-related cancers and warts.

A Lancet 2021 study found it reduced cervical cancer risk by over 87% when given before sexual activity begins.

3. What types of HPV vaccines are available in Thailand? How much do they cost?

Vaccine Type HPV Types Covered Estimated Price per Dose
4-valent 6, 11, 16, 18 Approx. 3,000-3,500 THB
9-valent 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 Approx. 6,000-7,000 THB

4. Who should get the HPV vaccine? How many doses are needed?

The vaccine is recommended for all genders from age 9 onward, especially before sexual debut.

  • Ages 9-14: 2 doses, 6 months apart
  • Ages 15 and older: 3 doses (Month 0, 2, 6)
  • Recommended for every gender, and immunocompromised individuals as well

5. If I already have HPV infection, can I still get vaccinated?

Yes. Even if you've been infected with one type of HPV,

the vaccine can protect you from other types you haven't been exposed to.

CDC still recommends vaccination in these cases.

6. Does HPV always cause symptoms or cancer?

Most HPV infections are asymptomatic and clear up on their own.

However, persistent infection with high-risk types (like HPV-16 or HPV-18) may lead to cancer if not detected early.

7. Are there side effects after getting the HPV vaccine?

Most people experience only mild side effects, such as soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, slight fever, fatigue, or headacheall of which typically resolve on their own.
