Anal Skin Tag: Causes, and How to Treat?

Have you noticed a soft piece of skin near the anus that does not hurt but feels like extra skin protruding from the area?

It may be an anal skin tag, also known as a perianal skin tag. An anal skin tag is a small amount of excess skin around the opening of the anus and is generally a benign condition.

Anal skin tags may develop after hemorrhoids, inflammation, or an anal fissure.

Summary: A common anal skin tag is not contagious and is not cancer. If it does not cause pain or interfere with daily life, it usually does not need to be removed unless the patient prefers removal for cosmetic or comfort reasons.

What Causes an Anal Skin Tag?

1. Anal Skin Tags After Hemorrhoids

When an external hemorrhoid or previously swollen hemorrhoidal lump shrinks, the stretched skin may not completely return to its original shape. This can leave behind a small flap or piece of excess skin around the anus.

2. Anal Skin Tags Associated with Chronic Anal Fissures

People with a chronic anal fissure may develop a skin tag at the outer end of the fissure known as a sentinel tag. In these cases, the skin tag may occur together with pain or bleeding during bowel movements caused by the fissure itself.

3. Chronic Irritation or Inflammation

Previous inflammation, irritation, or trauma around the anus may sometimes leave excess skin after the inflammation has healed.

Are Anal Skin Tags Dangerous?

If the lesion is a true anal skin tag, it is generally harmless, non-cancerous, and not contagious. Therefore, not every anal skin tag needs treatment.

The important first step is confirming that the lump is actually a benign anal skin tag, because several conditions around the anus can look similar.

How to treat Anal Skin Tags?

If There Are No Symptoms, Removal Is Usually Not Necessary

An anal skin tag can usually be left untreated if it does not interfere with daily activities, hygiene, or comfort.

It is helpful to avoid constipation and excessive straining during bowel movements. If hemorrhoids or an anal fissure are also present, these conditions should be treated according to their underlying cause.

Anal Skin Tag Removal May Be Considered If It Causes Irritation, Hygiene Problems, or Cosmetic Concerns

If an anal skin tag is large, makes cleaning difficult, causes friction or irritation, or the patient prefers removal for cosmetic reasons, the doctor can evaluate the most appropriate removal method. Options may include surgical removal, CO laser removal, or electrocautery.
