Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection affecting the skin and mucous membranes.

It is caused by a virus in the Poxvirus family and spreads through direct contact,

including sexual contact.

While not life-threatening and rarely developing into cancer,

it can cause distress and impact quality of life.

Causes of Molluscum Contagiosum and Risk Factors

  • Close contact or sexual activity with an infected person
  • Sharing personal items such as towels or underwear
  • Weakened immunity, e.g., HIV infection or immunosuppressive medication
  • Children in daycare may contract it through shared play

Symptoms and Characteristics of Molluscum Contagiosum

  • Small raised dome-shaped bumps (2-5 mm) with a central dimple containing white, waxy material resembling rice grains
  • Can appear in clusters around the genitals, arms, legs, or face
  • Some cases show redness or itching due to inflammation
  • Generally painless but may cause cosmetic concern

Diagnosis of Molluscum Contagiosum

Diagnosis is usually based on the appearance of the bumps.

In some cases, a small biopsy may be done to confirm it is not another skin disease or HPV-related wart, following guidelines from ACOG and the Institute of Dermatology, Department of Medical Services.

Molluscum Contagiosum Treatment Options

  • Topical agents for exfoliation such as TCA or Salicylic Acid (may take several weeks)
  • Cryotherapy (1-3 sessions)
  • CO2 laser removal
  • Some cases may resolve spontaneously within 6-12 months but risk transmission if untreated

Prevention and Self-Care

  • Always use condoms during sexual activity
  • Avoid contact with others lesions
  • Do not share personal items
  • Seek early treatment to reduce transmission to partners
  • Maintain good hygiene and overall health to support immunity

Doctors Advice

Although molluscum contagiosum is not severe, it spreads easily. Anyone with suspicious bumps should seek evaluation by a sexual health specialist. Early treatment reduces both spread and anxiety.
